Varnhem – Kata farm

Close to the monastery ruins in Varnhem, archaeologists made an outstanding discovery from a time before monks arrived there in the 1100s. It turned out to be the ruins of Sweden’s oldest church, a private farm church from the Viking era.

The church crypt is probably the oldest preserved room in Sweden and shows the Vikings actually became Christians 100 years earlier than previously thought. We designed a new building to protect and display the 1000-year-old walls and tell the story of Kata Farm, named after the woman who ruled the large property during the final stages of the Viking era.
